Shared Fan Characters[]

The only case I can remember there being canon-wide shared fan characters is in the case of the My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic series. There are MANY characters that the fans have given a somewhat-agreed-upon backstory when in reality they are background characters that are there to fill the world the main characters live in and many of them have never spoken a word. The most famous of them is Ditzy Doo, (or Derpy Hooves, alternate name) who was picked out of a crowd of extras for having off-model eyes. Fans gave her a background as a local mailpony and a lover of muffins... and the creators of the show noticed such that she might even be canon now, appearing in future episodes with eyes purposefully derped. Fans write about her all the time, using this shared characterization. There are many other examples: characters such as Lyra, Bon-Bon, Octavia, and even a Doctor Who expy Doctor Whooves that get this fandom treatment in this particular canon.

Maybe another good example from a different canon might be Figwit? Aster Corbett 15:30, October 3, 2011 (UTC)

I've never heard characters like that referred to as "fan characters" except here, though. I've always understood it as synonymous with "original character," a character made by a fan. ~Neshomeh 22:45, October 3, 2011 (UTC)
Hm, except in this case, it's taking a canon bit/Generic character and filling in the background...so it's a sort of canon OC? I don't even know. This is pretty confusing.
And yup, this is me, replying to something two years after it was said...

Actually Mr Allen/Mr Hugh, Workbitch Bartholomew, and Shinbun-kun (amongst others) are such minor Hetalia canon characters that they fall into the 'fan character' category. I call them "fanon characters" since there's such a huge fan consensus on how each of them behaves that it's practically fanon. (Well, Mr Allen's fanon, Mr Hugh's my take on the same character.)
