Star Trek: Enterprise (originally titled just Enterprise) first aired in 2001. It is a prequel to all other Trek series, being set in twenty-second century (2151), one hundred years prior to Kirk's time and about one hundred years after First Contact between Humans and Vulcans. The series largely revolves around "setting up" all the familiar features of the other series, including the technology and political foundations of the Federation. Predating Starfleet, the NX-Enterprise is the first Earth ship capable of reaching warp five, and therefore the first to leave Earth's solar system and truly explore space. The series was cancelled in 2005, after four seasons.

The first and second seasons contained mostly stand-alone episodes, without many strong story arcs. In the last two seasons this changed, with season 3 covering the Xindi threat, and season 4 being comprised of many two- or three-part stories which focused on Earth more than the other seasons.

In Fanfiction

Enterprise isn't as well-known as other Star Trek series, so there isn't as much fanfiction centred around it. That said, fanfic does exist.

Malcolm Reed is a popular character for shipping, and notably the writers initially planned to make him gay but they changed their minds, making him a popular target for slash fics, usually involving Trip or Hayes, but occasionally Archer or Mayweather. If Malcolm is shipped with a woman, it's usually Hoshi or T'Pol due to their being the two main female characters and, in the latter case, because Malcolm has once expressed attraction towards T'Pol. In badfic, he's usually made even more fond of explosions than in canon, or made into a British stereotype.

Trip is usually paired with either Malcolm or T'Pol (the latter of which eventually becomes canon). In badfic, his Southern accent will be written phonetically.

If a fic centres on Hoshi, it will usually be either a romance or an angsty story about her either having low self-esteem (possibly stemming from her self-deprecating behaviour in canon, particularly in early episodes) or being some how disabled, such as losing her hearing or developing selective mutism. Expect fanfic to also make a big deal out of the fact that her name means "star"-- while this in itself does not make a story a badfic, it should be noted that Hoshi's name meaning was never brought up on the show. Badfic will usually have her behaving like a whiny kid.

T'Pol is also a relatively common character for shipping, though not as common as Malcolm Reed. If she is in a badfic, expect her to be OOC, since badifc authors are notoriously bad at writing Vulcans.

Phlox is generally exempt from shipping, and in badfic he will usually only show up if the story needs a doctor.
