William Shakespeare was a poet and playwright living in London, England, in the Real World in the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries. He was also known as 'The Bard of Avon', or simply 'The Bard'.
His plays include Romeo and Juliet, Hamlet, Macbeth, Othello, Julius Caesar, A Midsummer Night's Dream, and Titus Andronicus, among many, many others that we won't continue to list here because that's Wikipedia's job. All of Shakespeare's work is considered to be great literature, and many agents will become very, very angry if an author does not show him the proper respect. Unfortunately, Shakespeare's work is no longer under copyright protection, and thus anyone is free to reinterpret his work as they like. The nice person with the flamethrower recommends that you do not take this as permission to do something stupid.
