Rape is the act of forcing someone to engage in sexual intercourse against their will. It is psychologically scarring to the victim and pretty much universally regarded as evil.
Statutory rape is engaging in sexual intercourse with someone under the legal age of consent.
The PPC takes a dim view of fanfics that use a serious violation for cheap angst. Very dim indeed.
Rape in Fanfiction[]
Disturbing numbers of badficcers seem to think that rape is a trivial matter that can be used to bring hurt/comfort, and forget the deep psychological impact that being raped has on the victim. Failing this, they seem to think that repeated instances of rape will end in the victim willingly participating and indeed falling in love with the rapist. This mode of thought assumes that an orgasm is always desirable and therefore experiencing one is the equivalent of experiencing actual romance. Let us be clear: it is not. That's not how sexuality works at all.
In the Lord of the Rings 'verse, rape stories usually involve Elves and forget that, canonically, an Elf that either suffers or perpetrates rape will fade and die.
Fic involving rape can be good if the subject is handled with the sensitivity it requires. "Vengeance Quest," for example, mentions it a lot and features it happening on at least three occasions, but is still considered a goodfic. This is partly because the rape scenes are not graphic and are therefore significantly reduced in squick, but mostly because the act is portrayed as a bad thing done by bad people, and the characters in the scenes react in a realistic way.
It's also possible that an author of rapefic may be using the story to help process their own trauma.
Rape is not to be confused with BDSM, in which the point is that everyone involved consents to whatever's being done, however gruesome it may seem to someone who's not into it. A story about consenting adults indulging in a rape kink is not necessarily bad.
Gang-rape[]
Gang-rape, also known as pack-rape, is rape with lots of assailants and a significantly smaller number of victims (usually only one). Rape already involves a victim being overpowered and having their agency taking from them. Gang-rape amplifies the horror exponentially, even if the rapists are otherwise-cute fuzzy animals. This is not something most people want to read about, but it is sometimes used as a plot device and an excuse for hurt/comfort in the same way as solo rape.
Rape and the PPC[]
Badfics involving rape are usually dealt with by the Department of Bad Slash, the Disturbing Acts of Violence Department, or both. They tend to result in agents throwing themselves in the Fountain of Bleepka for a few days afterward.
Technically, what Mary Sues do when having sex with their canonical lust objects falls under the heading of rape, as the LO is usually so mind-controlled and out of character that they are not capable of giving informed consent. Some former badfic characters such as Agent Derik show signs of psychological trauma due to having been a Sue's plaything, too.
The PPC takes a no-tolerance stance on rape within the organization. It is never condoned as an assassination method. Only three agents are known to have gone far enough off the deep end to deliberately put their targets in the path of rape:
- Agent Rez got in trouble for giving a River Tam character replacement to the Reavers.[1]
- Agents Laburnum and Foxglove were disciplined and sent to FicPsych for giving Raketooth and his companion to the Redneck Trees of Something Positive fame,[2] and for giving Jackson Earl Simon to Drip Rat.[3] (Their author was also told to knock it off.)
