The Old Kingdom is the setting of a series of fantasy novels by Garth Nix. The continuum is also known as the Abhorsenverse.
The world is divided into two parts: the Old Kingdom, where magic rules, and the Southern Nations, where it doesn't exist. The Old Kingdom is torn between two kinds of magic: Charter Magic, which is controlled, and Free Magic, which is uncontrolled and considered dangerous or even evil. Necromancy receives special focus, especially when it comes to dealing with the Dead, who are evil and destructive. Necromancy is not generally regarded favorably, to say the least; but it must be used to protect people from the Dead—which is where the main characters of the series come in.
