Agent Kaitlyn is the Department of Character Protective Services caseworker for Meriadoc Brandybuck and Peregrin Took. She is also (and for her it's definitely an 'also') a member of the Department of Floaters, partnered with Selene Windflower. She was created by Kaitlyn, but is now written by Huinesoron.
Agent Profile[]
Name[]
Kaitlyn's full name is Iolanthe Kaitlyn Jackson.[6] She doesn't use it. At various times, she has been known as Lan, Jenny, and Lynnie, but has mostly stuck with Kaitlyn since she turned 13.[6]
Appearance[]
Kaitlyn has long, curly black hair, which she used to pull back into a bun but has recently started to wear loose. She is somewhat shorter than average.[7] She has brown eyes, and despite some evidence to the contrary does not usually wear glasses (though the waistcoat is a fixture). In her preferred hobbit disguise, she looks exactly the same, only shorter and with curly black foot hair.[7]
Personality[]
Kaitlyn talks. A lot.[2] She actually has a rather logical outlook on life – she recognises when her beliefs are unfounded,[2] enjoys complex deductive reasoning,[8] can come up with complex plans on the fly,[3] and has taken the Wizard's Oath in every universe she's set foot in, on the off-chance that it works in one of them[9] – but it can be hard to tell beneath her cheerful ramblings.[7]
Her preferred disguise is a hobbit form, and in general she has a massive hobbit obsession.[7] Put simply, she thinks they are adorable[3] – and the fact that she can get high on mushrooms while in disguise as one certainly doesn't hurt.[7] She also idolises Lord Vetinari to the point of ignoring being killed in favour of continuing to ramble about how luscious his hair is.[2]
In some ways, though, Kaitlyn is quite shy. While in large groups, she will often try to avoid drawing attention to herself, and will downplay her own achievements to this end;[10] however, when the situation demands it, she is willing to put this aside and take an active role in small group planning.[11][12] In recent years, she has taken on some of her more socially fragile acquaintances as projects to try and help them integrate better into HQ life;[13] they do not always appreciate this.[14]
Agent History[]
Childhood[]
Iolanthe Kaitlyn Jackson was born on October 25th, 1989. Her early life was a quiet one – her mother Lorraine wasn't overly attentive, so she was mostly left to her books (her first word was 'book'). Her only other relative was her Auntie Lee, but her mother cut off contact with her when Iolanthe was five.[6]
When she was nearly seven, Iolanthe was visited by a trio of PPC agents: Oriana Gardner, Althea Gold, and Isobel ("Izzy") Telmarin, who promptly nicknamed her Lan. It turned out that her mother had written to the Canon Nursery School to ask if they would take her daughter on as a boarder; at Izzy's urging, Lan agreed to go.[6]
For the next few years, Lan had a good time at the school. She encountered her first Suvians, and hung out with a number of future PPC agents. But in 1999 HST, the crisis of the Reorganisation shook the PPC. The Canon Nursery School was shut down, the children were evacuated to HQ – and, to Lan's dismay, her friend Izzy left the PPC with the DIS.[6]
Lan spent a few months living in the Nursery before being adopted by Oriana and (reluctantly) Althea.[6] She went to live in their Response Centre, and decorated it with cross-stitches of pithy quotes.[15] Then, just after her twelfth birthday, The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring was released, and Lan found her new obsession.
Taking the name Jenny from one of her friends in HQ, Lan managed to get herself accepted into the first class at OFUM.[6] She had a brief run-in with Lina Holling early in her stay,[16] but otherwise seems to have kept her head down. On her return to HQ, she switched to calling herself Kaitlyn, and joined agent training classes with her best friend Jenn[15] (after apologising for misusing her name).[6]
Early Career[]
By April 2004, the 14-year-old Kaitlyn had signed up to the Department of Character Protective Services as caseworker for Peregrin Took, working alongside Chelsea Miller, Meriadoc Brandybuck's caseworker.[17] In general, the two treat Merry and Pippin as their joint charges,[7] since they are almost always affected together.[17]
Kaitlyn also worked frequently with Agent Bast, caseworker for Frodo Baggins.[18] When Bast became revered as the PPC Goddess GreyLadyBast, Kaitlyn was one of her first worshippers, and her first priestess.[19] In a conversation with Constance Sims, she was dared to steal the Sacred Mushrooms, and so had the vision which led to Bast's worshippers being clad in grey robes.[20]
Kaitlyn was friends with Ella Darcy of the Department of Author Correspondence,[21] and picked up from her a habit of sending concrit to the authors of stories she visited.[21] At some point, she also made the acquaintance of the Canon Librarian.[22]
In 2005 HST, Kaitlyn signed up for the Official Fanfiction University of Discworld, but (as far as she was aware) nothing came of it.[23] She continued to serve in the PPC, working through GreyLadyBast's departure and the abandonment of the Temple. Some years later, she contacted Dafydd Illian – former High Priest of Bast[19] and custodian of the abandoned Temple – and had herself set up as a fertility goddess in Bast's place.[24] Her Shrine formed the nucleus of the PPC HQ Temple of All Faiths,[25] though there is no indication that she remains actively involved in it.
In 2006 HST, Kaitlyn was peripherally involved in the Crashing Down crisis. She witnessed the Ghost in the Machine's broadcasts of security footage of the invasion, and recognised Izzy Telmarin among the last surviving Black Cats. She ran through HQ to reach her, but arrived at the Cafeteria too late; all she could do was ensure her old friend was remembered.[6]
The next few years were fairly quiet for Kaitlyn. She avoided being downsized from the DCPS,[6] and waited out the Macrovirus Epidemic in New Caledonia.[6] She even met her first girlfriend, Agent Aella of the DMS; they broke up amicably in 2011 after two years together.[6]
OFUDisc[]
In 2013, the Official Fanfiction University of Discworld finally launched its first class. It did so by instituting a time-slip from 2005 to 2013, which constituted a five-year shift in the canon.[23] It then brought in a class from the students who had applied in 2005 – but due to the way the OFU was created, overlaid those students with the personalities of their selves from eight years before.[8]
During the week[9] the OFU ran, Kaitlyn was part of a group of students who went hunting for her idol, Lord Vetinari.[2] Kaitlyn was killed by traps in the palace (though not without believing she had touched Vetinari's coat);[2] she was brought back the next day.[10]
Kaitlyn was one of four current or former PPC agents in the OFUDisc class.[10] The four of them speculated on the reasons for the various discrepancies between OFUDisc and other OFUs,[12] ultimately drawing the correct conclusions.[8]
During the attack by the vampire students, Kaitlyn fought bare-handed against Mercuria.[4] After the closure of OFUDisc, she was returned to HQ with her mind restored to normal.[26]
Solo Career[]
In 2014,[6] Chelsea was admitted to FicPsych;[7] the reason for this has been speculated as being Kaitlyn talking too much,[7], a lust-induced fugue state,[6] or as something rather more sinister;[27] whatever the case, Kaitlyn was held to be technically responsible.[28] Kaitlyn continued to take missions, being given badfics in person by a friend in the Department of Intelligence. On every mission, she then called for backup from every department even tangentially related to the story, ensuring she would have at least one temporary partner.[7]
After a few weeks of this, the larger departments stopped responding to her calls. Instead, she received assistance from departments such as the Department of Temporal Offenses, the Department of Geographical Aberrations, and even the Department of Out of Character Hobbits.[7] She speculated that Personnel had not yet realised she was without a partner.[7]
During this period she became friends with Agent Huinesoron of DOGA.[7] Over the years that followed, she made something of a project out of pulling him out of his shell,[13] but also training him out of his occasional bouts of Noldorin arrogance.[6]
Department of Floaters[]
In late 2014, the Board of Flowers mandated Kaitlyn's assignment to the Department of Floaters, in addition to her position in the DCPS.[28] She was partnered with the recently returned Selene Windflower.[28] In the Floaters, she continued her habit of providing constructive criticism to the authors of badfics she dealt with,[5] usually spending the few hours following each mission on writing this and her report.[21] As a result of this habit, she was able to convince the Morning Glory to issue her a high-quality office chair from Stores, much to the amazement of her partner.[22]
Among other adventures in Floaters, Kaitlyn has found herself temporarily hypnotised by Dracula while in wolf disguise,[29] prevented Selene from vampirising random bit parts,[3] and was accidentally neuralyzed by her partner.[1]
Somewhat by accident, Kaitlyn and Selene created a massive population boom in the Courtyard: the previous herd led by Alice the meara now has to share the space with a wolf pack,[29] an army of povs,[30] and a clan of Nac Mac Feegles[31] (although this last is not technically Kaitlyn's fault).
Kaitlyn has continued to expand her circle of friends who need help: she has adopted both Selene[14] and Hypatia[32] as projects, and will occasionally bug the likes of Dafydd Illian into making an appearance.[14] In December 2021, she hosted a Hobbit Yuletide feast to which she invited (or dragged) a number of Middle-earth native agents.[33]
