To bash is to abuse a character, original and fan made or canon, and distort their character or even kill the character because of a dislike the writer has for that character.
If the character is put out of character, it is often to make them evil (if they are nominally good), stupid, and otherwise unlikeable often so that their favorite characters (and/or original character) can get with each other, or to provide angst or make the story hurt/comfort.
Killing the character gets them out of the picture much easier, and can sometimes be disguised.
Bashing a character is a charge.
