To bash is to abuse a character, original and fan made or canon, and distort their character or even kill the character because of a dislike the writer has for that character.

If the character is put out of character, they are often made evil (if they are nominally good), stupid (if they are smart), behave like a thirteen-year-old emo-teenager (when they usually are mature) and otherwise unlikeable, even to the point that people who like them a lot in canon don't like them any more. The objective of the author seems to be to create a possibility so their favorite characters (and/or original character) can get with each other, or to provide angst or make the story hurt/comfort.

Killing the character gets them out of the picture much easier, and can sometimes be disguised.

Bashing a character is a charge.
